3 Common Eye Infections

Eye infections are painful. They can cause blurriness, discomfort, and pain. Most of them are avoidable if certain measures are taken. Here are three of the most common infections you can develop.

Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

This is one of the most contagious eye infections out there. It causes the eye to become swollen and red. Pain and irritation can also accompany the condition. It can be contracted during or after a cold. It can also be transmitted through bacteria on shared surfaces. This makes kids extremely susceptible to contracting the infection. Children who attend school, daycare, or play groups should have their hands washed and sanitized often.

Styes (Hordeolum)

These small, pimple-like bumps usually appear on the upper or lower eyelid. They are caused by obstructions in the oil glands in the lid. Symptoms include redness, swollen lids, and painful bumps. They usually clear up on their own within a few days. You can alleviate the pain by holding a soft wash cloth with warm water on your eye. To avoid getting a stye, be sure to take proper care of your contacts, remove your eye makeup before bed, and never touch your eyes.

Acanthamoeba Keratitis

This is an infection caused by parasites that invade the eye. It usually happens after swimming. People who wear contact lenses are normally the ones affected. If you do go for a swim with your lenses in, make sure you cleanse them immediately after. Take care to follow the directions given to you regarding your contacts and cleanse them daily.
