4 Amazing Facts about Your Eyes

Your eyes are something you use every day without even thinking about it. These incredible organs do some amazing things for you, and there is a lot that you probably don’t even know about them. Here at Harry W. Chan’s office, we love to teach people about some of these things. The following is a list of 4 of our favorite crazy eye facts.

1. Newborns Can’t Produce Tears

The cries you hear from newborn babies are not accompanied by tears. It takes up to 5 weeks for your tear ducts to be able to produce tears.

2. Your Eyes Heal Very Fast

The tissue on your eyes is one of the fastest healing tissues on the body. The constant moisture and the healing agents in your tears make it possible for the tissues there to regenerate and clear out imperfections in a shockingly short amount of time.

3. Your Eye Muscles Are the Most Active In Your Body

There is no muscle in your body that is as active as your optic muscles. These muscles are constantly working and moving, even when you are sleeping, hence the sleep cycle known as Rapid Eye Movement, or REM.

4. It Is As Yet Impossible to Transplant an Eye

Doctors are able to transplant skin, hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, and most other organs. Sadly, the eyeball has too many delicate and intricate nerve endings for doctors to be able to successfully form a transplant as of yet.
