4 Foods to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

Most of us have been told that eating carrots is good for our eyes. This isn’t just an old wives’ tale either; it’s completely true! But there are far more foods than just carrots that help to protect our eyes. We’d like to tell you more about what makes carrots good for your eyes, as well as introduce you to some other foods that will protect those peepers.

Carrots

Carrots and other orange fruits and vegetable are high in beta-carotene; it’s a variety of vitamin A that gives them their orange color. It also helps your retinas and other parts of your eyes to function better, protecting your overall eye health and vision.

Leafy Greens

How about tossing those carrots in with your next salad? Add some berries and almonds to that fresh, green lettuce, and you have a bowlful of eye health. All of these foods are packed with lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C, and vitamin E. All of these minerals help to lower your risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Eggs

The yolk of the egg is also high in lutein and zeaxanthin. So fry them up, hard boil them, scramble them, or poach them. No matter how you eat your eggs, they’re going to help protect your vision.

Fatty Fish

Fish like tuna, salmon, anchovies, trout, and mackerel are high in DHA, which is a type of fatty acid also found in your eyes’ retinas. Low levels of DHA in your eyes have been linked to dry eye syndrome. Adding more of these types of fish to your diet can help to keep your eyes healthy and keep them from drying out.
