Foods that Help the Eye and Ear


The fact that diet can affect things like heart health, diabetes, and even arthritis is well documented. What may not be so well known, however, is the affect that diet can have on the health of the eyes and ears! In our field, we see all types of ailments that can be relieved and even prevented with simple changes to the diet. By consuming these foods, it is possible to prevent disease and even aging from taking a heavy toll on these important organs.

Food for Healthy Eyes

Out of all the foods that are healthy for the eyes, the most popular is certainly carrots. For years, people have known that beta-carotene is good for protecting the health of the retina. Most people don’t know, however, that leafy greens, eggs, and almonds are also great for protecting and promoting eye health. Most of these foods contain vitamins and minerals which prevent things like macular degeneration and cataracts.¬†Other foods that are great for the eyes include citrus, berries, and fatty fish. The magic in these foods comes from high levels of vitamins C, E, and DHA, all of which contribute to healthy, happy eyes.

Food for Healthy Ears

When it comes to preventing hearing loss, fish is, once again, at the top of the list. The Omega-3 fatty acids found inside of fish are certainly on the power-food list. Other foods that seem to be linked to a decrease in hearing loss include vegetables, bananas, and dark chocolate. Vegetables and dark chocolate both have high levels of antioxidants which are responsible for ridding the body of damaging free radicals. Bananas are valuable because of their magnesium content, which has been linked to decreasing noise-related ear damage.
